A steady and sustainable supply of many of these materials is vital for a decarbonising society, renewable energy infrastructure, electric mobility and also consumer products and electronics. The outdated make-take-use-dispose model is no longer valid in a world of finite resources. As foreseen in the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s 2014 Call for KIC proposals, the submission and evaluation of the proposals was concluded and two new KICs were designated in December 2014: EIT Raw Materials - addressing the theme of raw materials - sustainable exploration, extraction, processing, recycling and substitution.

This will only be achieved with a coordinated and efficient collaboration among the different EIT KICs (Knowledge and Innovation Community) to ensure a greater impact from the Cross-KIC collaboration.

As many of you know LTU has been involved in establishing a consortium to send in a proposal on a EIT KIC on Raw materials which was due in September 2014. The consortium which consists of over 100 European partners from industry, academia and research institutes won the bid and since the beginning of the year we are working hard to establish the consortium.

We at RIC Leoben develop raw materials into a major strength for Europe through our innovative projects. We are reshaping raw materials EIT RawMaterials is the largest consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide. Its vision is to develop raw materials into a major strength for Europe. In the 2016 EIT RawMaterials call for KIC Added Value (KAVA) projects, SIM² KU Leuven won 8 new projects, including 3 as coordinator.
